Teresa Kari & Nils Titus: Sub Rosa

Teresa Kari

For me a rose is some kind of key or a trigger for many memories. I have quite passionate feelings toward roses. For years I had a strong distaste for a rose type which is called the Kardinal rose. I have been handling roses for commercial purposes since childhood. When I was a teenager I thought that a deep coloured red rose was the most vulgar thing to give to someone. Later on I have changed my mind.

In the beginning of the rose project I was first haunted by Gertude Stein’s “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” stanza, but I ended up building roses from different parts of decaying roses. Like Mary Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein.

“Friendship' hybrid tea roses have large, deep pink blooms edged with a wash of red and a strong, sweet fragrance. This All-America Rose Selection award winner can handle a variety of climates and shows good disease resistance.” - an advertisement in a house & garden magazine in the backroom of a flower shop.

“Sunsprite has deep lasting yellow color, super sweet fragrance, lots of glossy deep green leaves, an attractive bushy plant and good disease resistance. Not a bad combination! There always seems to be some color on this great rose. Happiest in cooler temperatures.” - some comments said by a rose enthusiast.

About the artist

Teresa Kari was born the same year when the rosa hybrid Sunsprite won the James Alexander Gamble Fragrance Award and the rosa hybrid Friendship won the AARS. Teresa grew up in hothouses on the planet called Suburbia. They are a Helsinki based artist working with sculpture installations and moving image. They are convinced that some day they will make a cool detached work of art without any personal emotion. No laughter, anger, joy, passion, angst, but it could take years to achieve...

The Latin phrase "sub rosa" refers to confidential knowledge. In our discussions while working on the exhibition, we went through how one could find forbidden knowledge on ideas, thoughts and feelings, both in our personal life and cultural ones in the society. In the exhibition Sub Rosa you will find artworks made with different techniques such as painting installations, immersive digital works, sculptures and video.

About the artist

During my bachelor and master studies I have been experiencing and combining different techniques such as painting, storytelling, performance and immersive digital media. Combining these really different, both old and new techniques, have made it possible for me to get a unique way to tell stories. The stories I tell are about the history, present and future of our western christian culture and of patriarchal and matriarchal theories. I want people who experience my art to perceive new insights and to question our own and other cultures.

I was born in Gotland, Sweden in 1991 and moved to Finland to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in 2015.
