Riikka Anttonen: That year in Melbourne I had insomnia

That year in Melbourne I had insomnia exhibition constructs out of three dimensional works and structural interventions in the exhibition space. The process plays an important role in the making of the spatial body of work; some of the items have been produced as a side product while working with the other pieces, and eventually these different components finds their role as a part of the whole. During the exhibition the body of work changes and items are removed from the space one by one. As a result, spatial intervention becomes the central focus. In the exhibition Anttonen is exploring the relationship to their own medium and the tradition of the white cube.

About the artist

Riikka Anttonen (b. 1982) is a Helsinki based visual artist. They are interested in the borders of different mediums and wants to explore the wide spectrum of painting. Anttonen´s works takes place in an expanded field of painting and often has a conceptual approach. For them it feels interesting to call the works paintings even though they are not so sure anymore what to call them. That year in Melbourne I had insomnia -exhibition is the second part of Anttonen´s thesis work.

Sjors Hoogerdijk: Transmission

‘Transmission’ is about claiming space in a discord that is designed to be single direction ‘communication’. Using the characteristics of FM transmission to show disparity in communication between sender, receiver and how discord is set up to favour the one owning the means of communication.

Three FM transmitters are set to the same frequency and transmit a single tone each. The tones are different from the others and thus create a chord together. The transmitters are solar powered and need a big stage light pointed at the solar panel to keep operating.

You influence the flow of information and the light to the solar panels. Changing the sound from a chord to a convoluted sound that changes as you navigate the space. With ones presence in the room the radio waves are warped and distorted. Also the transmitters are easily starved of energy by a body blocking the stream of light to the solar panels.

Practical setup: 3 FM transmitters on one end of the room, stage lights from the ceiling and on a stand in the middle, transistor radio in the other end.

About the artist

Sjors Hoogerdijk (b. 1987, The Netherlands) is a cross media artist living and working in Finland. Studying as a master student at the Time and Space study area of Uniarts Helsinki's Academy of Fine Arts. Interested in interactions, discord and meanings. Using these interactions of media and conversation in symbolical audio installations.

About the artist

Essi Immonen (s. 1995, Rautjärvi) is a Helsinki-based visual artist who works mainly within printmaking, sculpure and installation. The works in the exhibition stem from, among other things; urban planning, the lack of a permanent studio, bus railings, the manual doors of old elevators, activities counted as relaxation (cooking and swimming, badminton), artificially sweetened energy drinks, dog fever. Immonen is completing her MFA studies in the printmaking department of the Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition is the second part of her MFA degree, the first part was on display in Kuvan Kevät 2021 -exhibition. Immonen has graduated as a visual artist from Saimaa University of Applied Sciences in 2018.
