Roope Pyykönen

Roope Pyykönen is a self-taught artist translating his voice through oil painting. Pyykönen’s identity as an artist is a fusion of how he sees everyday life through his own lens and how he interprets these things and transfers them into his craft. In his process he pays attention to what’s happening in the world and around him, while shifting his attention inwards.

Pyykönen’s artistic process is driven by enthusiasm and curiosity. Nature and people are strong themes in his work. Pyykönen captures spaces where he can create an imaginary depiction or scenery that inspires and translates the way of viewing the world onto the canvas and for people to see. Pyykönen’s work is mostly figurative and there are usually aspects that challenge societal norms and invite the viewer to have a closer look.

For the past three and a half years, Pyykönen has been learning the craft of oil painting on his own. The process has been a continuous unfolding of what it means to live life through the eyes of an artist. Pyykönen wanted to learn the traditional techniques of oil painting to serve the purpose of his art. Pyykönen is at a point in his artistic journey where he’s really starting to notice the growth of a personal, unique style. Currently he’s working in his studio in Punavuori, Helsinki, on pieces for his upcoming solo exhibition, alongside with the between us exhibition. between us will be the first exhibition he’s participating in.
